DISCO

INVIERNO

Viisikymmentä vuotta sitten elettiin diskon kulta-aikaa - Amerikassa. Tuon syksyn “Disco Inferno” kasvoi Saturday Night Fever -leffan soundtrackin jättisuosion myötä koko aikakauden kulmakiveksi. Vietnamin sodan, öljykriisin ja kovan työttömyyden lamaannuttamille mustille ja queer-vähemmistöille diskot tarjosivat urbaanin lohdun ja itseilmaisun äänen - tanssin vapauttavan soihdun pimeyteen. Saman ajan Suomessa paettiin lähinnä maalta kaupunkeihin. Lavatanssien jälkeen tuuperruttiin alkoholiin ja sydäntauteihin. Diskon glamour, spektaakkelit ja poliittisuus loistivat ainoastaan poissaolollaan.

In Disco Invierno, I’m inquiring the relationships between parallel realities, memories, and aesthetics of nostalgia.  A farmer’s milk container beckons with its dazzle, but the stiff and tranquil rhythm calls from an exhaustingly slow winter months.  The room is a memory from an era I haven’t lived. Rurally found objects carrying dormant emotions we longed to feel.

Fifty years ago, the golden age of disco was in full swing—in America.  “Disco Inferno”, released that fall, grew into the cornerstone of an entire era, fueled by the massive success of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. For Black and queer minorities, crippled by the Vietnam War, the oil crisis, and high unemployment, discos offered urban solace and a voice for self-expression—a liberating torch of dance in the darkness. Meanwhile in Finland, escapism happened only from the countryside to the cities.  Rural dance pavilion goers perished to heavy alcohol use and heart diseases. Reflected in the disco mirrors of the 70s was only the monoculture of Finland, not the politics or the glamour.

The alchemy of glass fascinates me.

It’s a process of sculpting light;
the refractions, the interplay of colors,
surfaces and curvature.

I design unique glass objects,
lumieres and tableware.
My works have been exhibited
by Finnish Museum of Glass,

Portrait series - a dream within a dream
An inquiry into making creativity visible.

The series of portraits is a study
of the artistic minds of the gamut
of people who I’ve met over the years,
trying to capture a glimpse of
their artistry and personality.

All visuals are created in-camera,
with no post-effects or
computer-added layers.
Sound art installation - Miltä Suomi kuulostaa? // What does Finland sound like?

How do you describe a nation? Your land?

How does the identity change over time?
What kind of perceptions we have of a place, when all the visuals are removed?
These are some of the questions I pondered together with the composers of the installation.
Timo Lassy, Elia Lombardini, Marko Nyberg, Ringa Manner, Lau Nau, Sasu Ripatti selected an intrquing location in Finland they wanted to introduce, and then created a journey of contemporary soundscapes in Finland.

The work travels well and it’s available for international installations.
